Welcome to Center for Soft & Biological Matter (CSBM) at IIT Madras
IIT Madras is proud to have been selected as one of the select Institutes of Excellence. IIT Madras has set up a number of Research Initiatives in diverse fields that are becoming Centres of Excellence within the IIT Madras system.
Overview
The Center for Soft and Biological Matter (CSBM) is a research group focused on investigating the fundamental properties of soft matter, which include polymers, colloids, liquid crystals, and biological materials. The center brings together scientists from various disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering to conduct research on soft matter. Soft matter exhibits unique properties that differ from those of traditional materials, such as elasticity, viscoelasticity, and responsiveness to external stimuli. Soft matter also plays a crucial role in many biological systems, such as cell membranes, protein folding, and DNA.
The Center for Soft Matter mainly focuses on advancing the understanding of soft matter through interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach. The center’s facilities and collaborative environment provide a platform for researchers to investigate the unique properties of soft matter and apply their findings to various fields.
